So I'm probably still going to do one if I have time this week, but here's an interesting article responding to Obama's call for work:
"...And if you don't win? Well, that's too bad. You've not only lost the contest, you've also surrendered your intellectual property. "All submissions will become the property of Obama for America," according to the fine print."
F--- you. Pay me. by Mike Monteiro
Chance is a part of everything. Design is and will always be bigger than a paycheck and the sour comments that Mike Monteiro made towards a free design competition sounds like he wants something for nothing. Bad designers usually want money and fame and not the experience in doing the good work.
ReplyDeleteGiving your work to a larger cause and audience is a noble cause in my opinion and if Shepard Fairey had not given of his talents to Obama then his design legacy would not have the international acclaim it has had since.
I don't think it matters that you aren't getting paid. It is a great opportunity for any designer because the designer that wins would get national or even international recognization and a signed copy of their own poster--I would rather have that than a few bills in my pocket any day..and logistically speaking how would the Obama campaign manage to pay 100,000+ designers for their work?
